What FODMAP stacking means for a meal

A meal can contain several foods that contribute FODMAPs. In Bloat Gone, you can log the ingredients and portions, see the app’s estimated meal rating, and compare it with your symptom record.

What is FODMAP stacking?

Monash University uses the term for FODMAPs that may add up when you eat several foods in one sitting. It concerns the combined meal. Several low FODMAP servings do not automatically make a meal unsuitable.

Tolerance varies. Monash notes that people whose symptoms are well controlled may have no reason to focus on stacking. If symptoms continue, a food and symptom diary can help you examine meal combinations with a dietitian.

The meal estimate in Bloat Gone

Add foods and portions to a meal. The app combines its available food estimates into an overall stacking level. You can see the rating beside the ingredients and meal time, then compare the entry with symptoms recorded later.

Some core foods have less detailed FODMAP group data than others. The meal score and group breakdown can therefore be approximate or incomplete. They are tracking estimates, not lab measurements, certified low FODMAP results or predictions of symptoms.

Check the portion

A rating in the food guide applies to that food’s listed serving. Another amount, preparation or packaged version may differ. The guide does not give maximum tolerated amounts.

Compare the estimate with your log

  1. Record the whole meal. Include sauces and toppings you know about, with portions when possible.
  2. Check what went into the rating. Look at the listed foods and remember that some app records have limited group data.
  3. Log symptoms separately. Note when they happened and how strong they were. The meal rating does not explain their cause.
  4. Look at more than one meal. Repeated entries can help you see whether a combination is worth discussing.

The IBS food diary guide covers recording meals and symptoms. You can also read how to review possible food triggers. Discuss diet restrictions or reintroductions with a qualified professional.
